A recent NPMA survey conducted by The Harris Poll reveals that only 24% of Americans are familiar with the signs of a bed bug infestation. “With travel season in full swing and bed bugs eager to tag along, we’re committed to equipping travelers with essential information and prevention tips to keep these pests at bay,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for NPMA.
If you have travel plans, here are tips to properly inspect for and stop the spread of these elusive pests:
-
Upon entering the room, put your suitcase and belongings in the bathroom on a tiled surface rather than on the carpet or the bed.
-
Inspect the entire room, including behind the headboard, under lamps and inside dressers, drawers, sofas and chairs.
-
Pull back sheets on the bed and check mattress seams, especially at the corners, for stains or spots.
-
Use a small flashlight for better visibility.
-
If you see anything suspicious, change rooms or establishments immediately. Do not stay in an adjacent room.
-
After returning home, vacuum and inspect suitcases outside before bringing them indoors.
